Universal Credit comes to Stockton
Universal Credit will be rolled out, in full, to all new claimants in Stockton Borough from 11th July 2018. This will effect new claims for benefit from this date.
It will replace 6 ‘means-tested’ benefits - these are benefits you can get if your income and savings are below a certain level.
Universal Credit works differently from other benefits - so if you’re moving from another benefit it’s important to know the differences.
The biggest differences are:
- you can get Universal Credit if you’re unemployed but also if you’re working
- you’ll get a single payment each month, rather than weekly or fortnightly
- instead of getting a separate housing benefit, your housing costs will be paid directly to you as part of your monthly Universal Credit payment
We have updated our BENEFITS section and included all the information you should need to help you through a claim. If this is not enough, remember you can click on `FIND A LOCAL AGENCIES WHO CAN HELP YOU`. This will guide you to a list of advice agencies who can help you locally.
For videos and other resources to help you through this change, please visit out TOOLS section in BENEFITS.
REMEMBER THAT UNIVERSAL CREDIT DOES NOT COVER COUNCIL TAX- you will still need to claim this separately from Stockton Borough Council. For information on how to claim council tax support click HERE
A series of fact sheets explaining how Universal Credit works, have been designed and produced by Infinity, Stockton. Infinity is a local group of organisations who get together to improve financial capability in the Borough.
